WARTIME NEWS 2009

WARTIME NEWS 2010

Wartime News, a quarterly publication of reminiscences of the Second World War, has been published since 1995.

A unique magazine written by the veterans themselves and produced by The Wartime Company, it enjoyed a loyal readership from those who served in WWII.

Throughout its 16 years of publication, our readers contributed their experiences as ex-servicemen and women, with many truly remarkable accounts from all theatres of the war. Many putting pen to paper for the first time, these recollections gave a graphic insight into some of the major battles of WWII.  Our readers told of their experiences whilst serving in the Army, Royal Navy and the RAF, along with those left behind to keep the home fires burning. The stories of the ordinary soldier, sailor, airman, were portrayed in their own words, the day-to-day fear of doing their duty for King and Country against an aggressive enemy, whilst others recalled the lighter side of the war.

These true stories are not accounts from ‘history books’, but from the pens of the veterans themselves, always telling how is was throughout the dark days of the war. Of course, the valuable contribution made by all those in Civil Defence, the Womens Land Army, and many others, even the children whose young lives were shattered, are not forgotten, and personal accounts from these people are also featured.

The story behind the publication’s success began with the 50th Anniversary of D-Day.  As Co-ordinator of a programme of events in Dorset, Marilyn Ward produced a newsletter featuring reminiscences of the area prior to the Normandy Landings in June 1944, when troops left from the ports of Poole, Weymouth and Portland, in addition to the gliders who flew from Tarrant Rushton airfield to land by Pegasus Bridge.

Once the 50th Anniversary was over in 1994, many veterans asked why the stories of WWII could not continue to be told for the benefit of future generations.  So in 1995, Wartime News was launched as a quarterly publication covering all aspects of the Second World War and thereafter was widely read throughout the UK and overseas.

So, from the first edition published in December 1995, many personal stories of bravery, comradeship and courage have been told through the pages of Wartime News until the 65th and final edition was published in November 2011.

However, you can still purchase volumes of Wartime News at a Special Price of £7.99, with each volume containing four editions. You can either pay by cheque or PayPal as indicated by clicking on one of the red coloured links above, which also allows you to see the contents.

"This collection is going to be priceless in the future - I find the stories so gripping to read" (Miss F.C. Cardiff)

"Thank you for Wartime News. I was very interested to read all the articles and it brought back happy memories of those wartime days." - Mrs M R of Wells, Somerset

"What a wonderful magazine you produce! I am full of admiration!" (Martin Sugarman, Archivist, AJEX Jewish Military Museum)

READ ALL ABOUT IT...

For those who served in the Second World War, or have a particular interest in the events of WWII, you will find Wartime News a fascinating publication.

It may surprise you to learn that each of the stories told are all first-hand accounts - written by the veterans themselves and not drawn from history books or other publications. Everyone's story is different and personal to them and that's what makes Wartime News unique!

Each account written is a true recollection of the author's experiences of a six-year war that covered defeats, victories and human tragedies. The cost was considerable and whilst every man was expected to do his bit for 'King and Country', no-one was prepared for such harsh conditions as Arctic convoys or being shot down over enemy territory and held as a PoW.

The continuing story of WWII from those who were there!

From its inception in 1995, Wartime News has continued from where the many wartime associations disbanded after the 50th Anniversary of D-Day in 1994. In the course of the following years and months, as these associations dwindled in size, many of their members urged that the previously untold stories which emerged after D-Day should continue to be told for the benefit of future generations. Wartime News became their voice and the publication has featured personal accounts from servicemen involved in such epic battles as the North Africa campaigns, the River Plate, Greece, Italy, the sinking of the Bismarck, the Dam Busters, Pedestal, D-Day, Operation Market Garden and so many others.

None of the veterans confessed to be heroes, and this same spirit continues today in other theatres. They come from people in all walks of life, some being unsung heroes and others just there at the time, playing their part for King and country.

Do click on the links below, in particular, 'Readers Personal Reminiscences' which is a collection of personal accounts we have reproduced from previous editions.
